Creating a Culture for Team Innovation and Creativity

We are always striving to keep innovation and creativity at the top of our priority list. Yes, I realize innovation and creativity qualify as "buzz words" and that you might read that and think - "duh, aren't we all trying to be innovative and creative?" The truth is those really are the best words to describe what it is that we are trying to accomplish inside our Maestro world.

Why it's Important to be Innovative and Creative

Good Things Come From Being Innovative

"Innovation may be linked to positive changes in efficiency, productivity, quality, competitiveness, and market share, among other factors" (1). Who doesn't want that?

Creativity is Desirable Because it has ROI

I bet you wouldn't have guessed that "about 60% of CEOs polled cited creativity as the most important leadership quality, compared with 52% for integrity and 35% for global thinking" or that "when CEOs were asked, 'what is the skill you most value in your people?' they said creativity" (2). Creativity is desirable because it gets results.

More Job Growth, Less Job Loss.

Just as business owners and leaders like when employees are more creative, employees like when their company has a culture to support and encourage that type of work environment. That means more people staying (and enjoying), and less people leaving.

How to Create an Environment Ripe for Innovation

Make a Goal Worth Fighting For

We want our team to work hard, get creative and push the boundaries, so we find projects that get our team geeked!

Eliminate Judgement

Our managers and team members (but especially managers) need to "encourage risk and expect failures." Sometimes an innovative and creative idea doesn't work out, and that needs to be ok.

Keep Communicating

Constant communication is key to creating a safe environment for feedback. When our team is actively swapping ideas and sharing what they know it's open game for anyone to jump in and share their ideas.

Get to Work

Brainstorming can be too much of a good thing(3). It's worth it to generate ideas and think outside of the box, but often times brainstorming never leads to an actual project or outcome. Leave time for brainstorming, but give it a limit and get to the real stuff!

Get a Team Together to Lead the Way

We are actively promoting innovation and creativity in our office through our R&D Team. This group of engineers tackle our off-the-wall, out-of-the-box, new, fun and exciting ideas. We aren't just talking about keeping innovation and creativity at the top of our priority list, we are doing it.

How do you keep innovation and creativity alive and well in your organization? Now that you know how good it is for your employees and results. Are there tweaks that you can make to your workflow, organizational structure, company environment, etc. to make it better?
